Research Design:
The genre of music I have chosen is Hip-Hop. This page is going to be about how Hip-Hop became Hip-Hop, Where it came from, what things influenced Hip-Hop, What Hip-Hip really is, and How it relates to African Americans/how African Americans relate to Hip-Hop. In this paper i will expand on the key things Hip-Hop has created and how much hip-hop is a influence on America.
Thesis:
Hip-Hop originated from Africans and came over to America in the early 1980’s. Hip-Hop was almost entirely everywhere else except America until the 80’s. Hip-Hop is a form of expression through poems over a beat, but Hip-Hop was more of a party or up tempo type of music.
History of Hip-Hop
Hip hop is a form of expression that finds its roots imbedded deep within ancient African culture oral tradition. The roots of hip-hop are mainly roots from African American music. Hip hop’s vocal style is very similar to the griots tribe of Africa. The griots tribe of Africa were traveling singers and poets who used their version of hip hop to express their feelings. Hip-Hop is a music genre that branshes from rap, but rap was vreated from the Hip-Hop culture. A product of cross-cultural integration, rap is deeply rooted within ancient African culture and oral tradition. Hip-hop is believed to have originated in the Bronx by a Jamaican DJ named Kool Herc. Herc's style of deejaying involved reciting rhymes over instrumentals. Herc and other DJ’s began to spread “Hip-Hop” across the Bronx and had tons of followers.
Change in Hip-Hop
Back then Hip-hop was simply called hip-hop. In the early 90’s hip-hop was known as “Commercial Hip-hop”. Commerical Hip-hop is like a transformed version of what old hip-hop was. Commercial hip-hop is a culture that involves music, dance, creativity, and artistry.
What is Hip-Hop?
Well, Hip-Hop is mainly composed of DJing and emceeing. But there are two other elements that Hip-Hop contains and they are graffiti and break dancing. AS these things grow and Hip-Hop becomes more popular it begins merging with other things like slang and peoples general mindset.
How is Hip-Hop changing?
Hip-hop as a musical melting pot is still evolving. It has become more eclectic, borrowing from soul, jazz and live instrumentations with the likes of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and most recently Kanye West championing the ‘soulful rap’ movement.
" Summertime" - By Will Smith & DJ Jazzy Jeff. This song came out in 1991.

Summertime is a mix of syncopation, call & response, and poly-rhythm. The syncopation is in the mix of the different beats and rhythms in the song. The call & response is when he says Summertime you hear the background singers say something else to respond to what he just said. Poly-Rhythm is the many different rhythms and beats you hear in the song.
"My Adidas"- By Run DMC. This song came out in 1986.

My adidas contains a poly-rhythm type flow to it. The poly-rhythm is easily noticeable through the different beats and rhythm you hear in the song. I also hear a lot of instruments in this song.
"Over" -By Drake. This song came out in 2010.

Over is more composed of syncopation but also has a little bit of polyrhythm in it as well. The syncopation is how the stronger type beats and instruments are played softer or lower than the weaker beats and instruments which are played louder. There is two beats in this song which is a form of poly-rhythm.
